Title: Through Thick & Thin
Class: Type 2
Art Center College of Design
Calligraphy in Los Angeles emerged from the culture of gang graffiti in the early 1920’s. East Los Angeles Mexican-Americans’ graffiti lettering styles – known as placas, are a tradition since WWII. Los Angeles Cholo style graffiti was dictated by an honored code of writing. Since the mid 90’s, this cholo style graffiti greatly inspired calligraphy artists from Los Angeles, bringing us some of today’s calligraphy masters.
“Through Thick & Thin” is a hypothetical art exhibition, showcasing Los Angeles best calligraphy artists at the BoatHouse Gallery. The assignment was to design a book and a poster for the exhibition.
